One of the movie studios has recently reached a settlement with the Played.to operator, who confessed that he did infringe on the copyrights by allowing the site’s users to stream Expendables 3. No other details of the settlement (like the amount the operator has to pay or other figures) were revealed, and thus far Played.to remains operational.
The movie studio LionsGate suffered a major setback a year ago, when the unreleased Expendables 3 leaked online in a very good quality. LionsGate sued a number of websites that failed to remove the movie, claiming the loss in revenue. According to the recent court filing, the operator of video hosting site Played.to admitted to willful copyright infringement for his role in the leak. Despite the fact that Played.to didn’t contribute to the original leak, its operator allowed to host copies of the movie to watch via embedded streams.
As part of the settlement, the site operator also admitted that he failed to process or respond to takedown notices and thus should take full responsibility for the resulting infringements. The proposed judgment has been agreed by both parties who then informed the court they have reached a confidential settlement. It is known that Played.to operator has accepted financial and other obligations to resolve the studio’s claims, but the amount he agreed to pay is not disclosed.
According to the court ruling, Played.to is also prohibited from hosting, linking, distributing and otherwise making available any copies of Expendables 3. It should be noted that the proposed judgment only applies to Played.to, while the claims against other services, the list of which includes the torrent search engine Limetorrents.cc, are still unsettled.
So, at the moment the Played.to website remains online, though the statistics shows that the service has lost a lot of traffic in recent months. Nevertheless, it remains a popular place to host videos.
